The Scientific Illustration major at the University of Georgia encourages student artists to develop a level of awareness that communicates visual information in a logical message or sequence that is not confusing to a viewer. Courses are available in digital imagery, graphic design, figure drawing, environmental graphics, color technique, and others.
The program is interdisciplinary and focused on the use of engineering principles in the marine environment rather than by the topic of study (e.g., physical oceanography, marine biology, chemical oceanography or marine geology). The program has two tracks: (1) Marine Instrumentation – emphasizes the design of operational and research instruments for use in the marine environment; and (2) Coastal and Near-shore Modeling - seeks to understand and predict coastal and near–shore processes that impact both natural and artificial coastal systems.
Students develop technical competence in diverse skills associated with major fine-art printmaking processes including intaglio (engraving or etching cavities to contain printing ink), relief, screen printing, digital printing, letterpress, book arts, papermaking, and lithography. Self-discipline, drawing ability, sense of design, and ability to accept direction and aesthetic criticism are essential keys for success. The B.S. in Computer Science at the University of Georgia provides a strong foundation in computer science theory and practice and is accredited by the Computing Accreditation Commission of the Accreditation Board for Engineering and Technology (ABET). The curriculum covers the design principles of key computing technologies such as hardware, operating systems, database systems, networks, graphics, and artificial intelligence. Students are therefore urged to concentrate in one particular direction such as illustration, typography, or packaging. This is accomplished by the student's choice of graphic design elective courses and projects in the senior year.
The Fashion Merchandising major at UGA is designed to provide students with a basic understanding of merchandising related to the apparel and textile industries. The curriculum emphasizes the skills and competencies needed for careers in fashion promotion, retailing, merchandising, and management. Course topics include but are not limited to retail planning and buying, global retailing, history of dress and fashion, apparel line development, visual merchandising, and trend analysis.
Students pursuing the B.F.A. in Graphic Design at UGA should have a genuine interest in solving problems through visual communications that combine art and technology. They must have an inherent sense of curiosity and inquisitiveness to solve graphics problems conceptually (both verbally and nonverbally) and are required to have an Apple Mac laptop for coursework; a digital camera is also recommended.
